Baby S update: pre-surgery

Author: Devyl Gyrl / Category: Baby S

C & B woke up super-early this morning to make the drive to Gainesville for Baby S’s pre-operative workup. She has a mass developing on her forehead, now … so we asked that they do a CT-scan to check it out, since she has to be in the hospital already. The last thing that poor child needs is a THIRD kind of cancer! No, we are NOT jumping to that conclusion - that was my lame attempt at a joke. *sigh*

So, the CT-scan was completed at 8-ish in the morning. B & C and Baby S were admitted and shown to a room. Turns out they have to share a room at this hospital. So, naturally, trying to make the best of it, they were conversing with the other parents. Not much choice: the room is so small, you can over hear even whispered conversations.

The other parents freaked when B & C told them that Baby S had just gone through chemo and was getting a pre-op workup. Turns out, the other child had an unknown infection, and was likely contagious. B & C questioned the nurse who told them, “It’ll be just fine. Don’t you worry. We are aware of what is going on.” SERIOUSLY??? We cannot allow Baby S to go into a shopping center for fear she’ll pick up random germs from unknown people … but you can put her in the SAME ROOM as a sick child?

So, the other child’s doc comes in and informs the parents that the child has a stomach virus, highly contagious. The other parents immediately inform their doc that Baby S had just gone through chemo, and was getting ready for an extremely invasive surgery tomorrow (these parents rock, ya’ll - they were so concerned for Baby S, despite everything THEY had just gone through with their own child! It was awesome!!). The doctor told them, and B & C, that Baby S needed to be moved. He set the wheels in motion …

Now, Baby S is sharing a room with a post-op patient. This other patient’s parents and doctor are aware that Baby S, B & C were in the other hospital room with a contagious child, so they will keep an extra-vigilent eye on the post-op child.

So … that is where we are right now. I don’t know when we’ll have our answers about her forehead. I hope they did remember to focus on that lump, specifically.

I will be posting as I get new information.

Thank you, all of you, for your thoughts and prayers.
