Oh For the Love of Reading! (#154/365)
Author: Devyl Gyrl / Category: Blog365, Friends / FamilyMany, many moons ago, Tween was a baby … a baby with an insatiable desire for stories. I do not know if it was the sound of my voice, or the fact that reading calms me, and therefore calmed her, but even when she was in the womb, reading would soothe her. I could not just tell her a story … the book had to be in hand, resting on my belly (when she was still “baking,”) or on the floor/bed/couch in front of us so we could both see the pages (from the time she was about 3 months, on).
Today, Tween still loves reading, and still loves being read to. We have read several books together in the last few years. We have also read several of the same books. Some, she has introduced to me: she wanted to read Twilight, and it happened to be about the same time that my Gyrlies over on my favorite social website were bragging about how great the series was … so i got her the first book, then proceded to read it myself. My friend bought her the other three for Christmas, which she devoured, and I am in the process of reading now. Others were childhood favorites that I introduced to her: Lurlene McDaniels has several books I loved, as does Judy Blume (I got them for her a few years back) and Cynthia Voigt (I shared those with her a couple of years back, too).
On a recent trip to Wal*Mart, I found specially-priced paperback versions of the classics, such as
Pride and Prejudice,
Sense and Sensibility,
The Scarlet Pimpernel, and
Wuthering Heights. I think we picked up 5-6 of these classics, and I plan to read them with her, hopefully this summer.
There are at least a dozen other “classics” online at this discounted prices (currently $4.21, although we picked up ours for $3.00 each!), so maybe every paint job I get paid for, I’ll try to budget in another of these great finds!
I am excited … she gts interested in nearly everything I introduce her to, so I hope she’ll go much farther than I ever did in reading exploratively. I have not read half of the books we bought, so I will love sharing them with her … and sharing the first-time-ever-reading experience with her, too!
I tend to read mostly romances, but I want her reading base to expand over several genres … and hopefully, we will find a new favorite book or two together!!
