Books, Books, Books …(#217/365)
Posted by: Devyl GyrlMy Lil Lady likes to read … everything. She started with typical little girl books, but has moved on to read more things than I ever branched out to when I was a kid. She reads about ghosts, vampires, Amish girls, and Mexican immigrants with the same passion.
Today, I ask you: what books can you recommend for a 13 yo girl? I’ll be happy to try to get her to read most things, and some of them we read together. We just need suggestions from all of you!
Thanks muchly!

They’re oldies but goodies…has she read the Anne of Green Gables series? Little Women? Black Beauty? All excellent choices!
I’m so glad she is an avid reader!

Branching out, eh…
If future/space is of interest, I just (finally) started reading the Foundation series by Asimov. Excellent, and I don’t think the language is above what Lil Lady can handle.
Podkayne of Mars by Heinlein is also quite good, and centers around a young lady too.

At that age I LOVED the Little House on the Prairie books. I read them until they fell apart.

Tolkien. Start with the Hobbit and then Lord of the Rings. Also, the Wizard of Earthsea trilogy by Ursula Le Guin.

Oh, and Asimov is great too. Also, some of the Arthur C. Clark books like 2001 and the Rama series.

How about Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman (he wrote Coraline and many other good books), The Golden Compass (and the rest of the series), Roald Dahls books, and I will add more if I think of them

I think I fell in love with the classics around that time. But I’m not sure. I have terrible memory so can’t remember, but I know I loved Price and Prejudice and read it over and over around that age.

Perpstu - Great list to start with, and we did borrow Anne of Green Gables from the library (and the 2nd book in the series too), so I hope we’ll get to read them soon.
Beav - I love having Geek friends. Excellent options I would not have picked up on my own!
NAMG - she wasn’t interested in the books for Littel House … maybe I’ll try again soon.
Dave - Again, excellent choices I would not have discovered on my own, most likely. Thanks for the recommendations - I think she’ll really love them.
Brainmusic - we have borrowed the Goldan Compass series already - it is next on our list!
Yoonamaniac - I did just purchase a handful of the classics in softback at Wallyworld. Pride & Prejudice is one of the ones we picked up to read!
